The much-anticipated Jio Smartphone launch is expected in today’s Reliance Industries AGM, which kicks off at 11 am in Mumbai. Chairman Mukesh Ambani will take stage to give his annual update on how the various companies of the group are faring, but all eyes will be on the launch of this new offering from Reliance.
Jio-centric announcements are likely to be on features, specifications, price and data charges at the Reliance AGM on Friday.
Chairman Mukesh Ambani introduced Jio SmartPhone as “India ka Smartphone- Made in India, Made by Indians and Made for Indians”, for an “effective price of Rs. 0” – But you have to pay a “fully refundable” Rs. 1,500 deposit, refunded after three years on returning the phone.
The Jio SmartPhone is a modern and reliable 4G VoLTE feature phone, a technology which Mr. Ambani claimed was dissed by the skeptics. He proudly announced that Reliance proved them all wrong.
The Jio SmartPhone is a feature phone but comes with a large screen, access to apps and of course 4G data and 4G VoLTE calls which will practically cost the customer nothing for the device and Rs. 153 per month as a monthly tariff.
The Jio SmartPhone will be available for beta testing from 15th August and for pre-booking from 24th August.
Jio SmartPhones will be available for sale on a first come-first serve basis from the last quarter of 2017. 5-6 million phones will be made available every week.
The Jio SmartPhone will have free voice calls always and more over from 15th August, the JioPhone will come with free unlimited data with high speed.
The Jio SmartPhone comes with an awesome plan of just Rs. 153 a month including the cost of the phone for the users.
There will be a weekly plan of Rs 54 and a two-day plan of Rs 24 with all the same features like data, voice etc.
Rs 1,500 will be a refundable security deposit that will be refunded after 3 years on returning the phone.
Mr. Ambani added that the Jio SmartPhone will be focusing to cover 99% of India’s population in the coming year. “Because of Jio, India’s 4G coverage will be more than its 2G coverage”.

Besides this, TRAI data this week showed that Reliance Jio 4G download speeds hit an all-time high in May. Jio recorded a download speed of 19.123 Mbps, ahead of Idea download speed at 13.509 Mbps and Vodafone download speed at 13.187 Mbps.
A report which is given by London-based wireless coverage mapping company said that Jio helped India to reach the 15th spot for 4G availability.
According to OpenSignal’s “State of LTE” report, India had 72% of 4G using availability in the third quarter of 2016, later it jumped to 81.6% in the first quarter of 2017.
