About 89% of Google’s revenue came from advertising. Yeah, you heard right, it’s advertising, and again advertising.Google’s majority revenue comes from two advertising platforms
- Google AdWords and
- Google AdSense.
Since the age of Television and Radios, advertisements have seen their own importance not only for the products they are selling but also for a lot of other companies who saw a potential in this market and started as advertising firms. TV commercials were a good source of income for TV channels to survive and generate enough revenue for their contents.
But Technology has never seen the same page of book for too long. Time changes and came the Internet. Online advertisement was born and Ads begin to show their footprint over internet. Now websites started showing ads and earned pennies, and in turn showing you some free contents/results. Things even got better with AI. These intelligent algorithms trace and analyze some data of yours and will show you ads relevant to your queries and searches. Google’s Adsense is one great example of it. Searching for new pair of shoes ?? Ads from Reebok and Puma will pop up. Smartphones ? Samsung, LeEco, Xiome will fill your page. And at times, they serve a good purpose too. Like they make revenue for many bloggers and freelance workers. They increase the sales of many handicrafts and local businesses online. People get what they wish.
“But Desire isn’t Need and Want doesn’t Gets.”
Though these algorithms have been a great play for both that shows these ads like Google and those who post the ads like Samsung, Amazon, Puma, it is we, the users of an internet that are being exploited. And the irony of the situation is that, unaware of this, we feel it’s the best thing that could happen.
“When something online is free, you are now the customer, you are the product.”
– Jonathan Zittrain
These ads unknowingly have a psychological effect on our mind and we get caught in their cobweb. They play with our privacy, trace our systems, store our data and we barely bother. The offline classifieds, were truly random. They were same for everyone viewing and has nothing to do with any individual’s life. But the online classifieds, they track us. They know what we desire, they know what we will pay for, they know what we need, and they exploit this knowledge about us.

Commercials used to serve a good purpose i.e. to advertise for the companies and their products. People got to know and then had the authority to decide what to do. Online Advertisements came as the smarter way to target audience and were more appealing to advertisers, displays as well as consumers. Sometimes it’s good to see these advertisements to support the content creators whose contents are free for us. But with some big names tracking the internet users and violating our privacy, has turned out to be evil. They tend to control our choices and rule us psychologically.
